Ryhurst has completed the construction of a £20m community hospital in Newton Abbot in Devon. The new facility, which will be one of the UK’s most energy efficient hospitals, has been officially handed over to Devon Primary Care Trust and opened its doors on the 12th January.
Ryhurst introduced a wide range of environmental technologies in to the new building, including a super-efficient combined heat and power unit to provide the facility with a constant base load of electricity, high levels of insulation and low energy lighting. The combined effect of these measures will reduce energy use and costs significantly.
The new hospital was developed and funded through the Private Finance Initiative and was built by Rydon Construction. As part of the deal, Rydon Maintenance will maintain the fabric of the building, as well as its systems and grounds, over the next 25 years.
David Hay, Managing Director of Ryhurst said: “This has been a landmark project for us and we’re extremely proud to have provided the Devon Primary Care Trust with a fantastic building which is not only a great place to treat and care for patients, but also environmentally sensitive.”
The building replaces Newton Abbot’s existing 110-year old hospital which is mainly made up of Edwardian and Victorian building stock. Liz Stirling, Modern Matron at the community hospital, added: “We are delighted to be able to treat patients in the excellent facilities of the new modern hospital. It has a fantastic feeling of open space which will have a positive impact on both staff and patients.”
The building, which is situated at Jetty Marsh on the outskirts of Newton Abbot, will open on 12 January 2009.
