Ryhurst completes construction of magnificent new hospital in Redcar, Yorkshire

January 2010

Ryhurst has handed over the completed Redcar Community Hospital to NHS Redcar and Cleveland in north-east Yorkshire on time and on budget. Ryhurst was selected as preferred bidder alongside Sir Robert McAlpine in October 2007 to develop the new energy efficient £35 million integrated hospital and health centre to serve 100,000 people across south-east Teeside. The facility replaces both the outdated Victorian Stead Memorial Hospital and the Redcar Health Centre which was built in the 1970s. As work neared completion in September, the Trust, Ryhurst, Sir Robert McAlpine and pupils from a nearby local primary school together buried a number of time capsules to mark the importance of this facility to the local region. This was Ryhurst’s first PFI project in the north of England. Previous experience delivering long distance PFI contracts through third party partners in Somerset and Cornwall ensured that we would be able to meet the challenge . Mike Southgate, Senior Project Manger at Ryhurst, has dedicated the better part of the last two years of his life in Redcar to ensure that the project was delivered to an exceptional standard and is a total success.
