The Isle of Wight NHS Trust delivers an in-house freshly cooked catering service to patients, staff and visitors. The service also operates a commercial service that is delivered from the full circles restaurant that is open to patients, staff and visitors.

Wight Life Partnership (WLP) were instructed by the Isle of Wight NHS Trust to undertake a full and comprehensive strategic review of its catering services to:

  • Develop an understanding of the current level of service
  • Provide options to improve efficiency, safety and satisfaction
  • Consider the potential to improve commercial income

Recommendations for Improvement

WLP identified a number of recommendations for improvements to the Trust’s catering services, based against the cost for delivering the service, quality, satisfaction and productivity. The recommendations were broken down by service area and identified improvements that could be achieved across the short, medium and long term, including:

  • Procure a specialist private sector catering services partner
  • Change the way food is produced, regular menu rotations, measure ingredients and control portion sizes according to patient requirements
  • Review catering staff working hours, contracts, training and responsibility
  • Provision of fresh and healthy ‘on-the-go’ food, a cashless payment system and a review of the vending contract management and solution
  • Implementation of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to measure and manage performance

The implementation of these and other recommendations included in the final report produced by WLP for the Trust would generate significant financial savings and increase income whilst transferring the responsibility of investment to the private sector.
